Nokia N95 Internal GPS Works

January 24th, 2008 Posted in Technology

Nokia N95 8GB Cell PhonePersonally, I am not a big fan of Nokia cell phones. However, the past few days I was busy playing with a dozen or more Nokia N95s. Why? Because I am able to provide a service everyone wants, and everyone started to approach me for such service. This ties into one of the biggest business concept ever: offer a service or product that is unique and it will generate a buzz by itself. I am not going to talk about business concepts in this post. I am going off-topic and talk about phones.

If you’re a Nokia N95 user, you should know that the integrated navigation system is not the best. It does show you maps and tell you where you are but in order to use its full features like voice turn by turn, you have to pay. It costs around $10 for 7 days of use. If you do the math, why not just buy a standalone GPS?! As a result, many people are looking for alternative GPS solutions for their Nokia N95s.

About 4 days ago, one of my friends asked me to help him out with his N95 GPS. He wants to use the GPS but not willing to pay for subscription. I told him I would try and brought it home. After a few hours of research and downloading, I made it work. I installed a special copy of Route 66 navigation software and able to use the N95’s internal GPS receiver. My friend was very happy and he began to spread the news. The next day, other friends using the Nokia N95 started calling me.

I am not going to post any links or guides here because of legal issues. However, if you want to use your N95 GPS for free and having problems, feel free to discuss with me.

I have N95. Still learning how GPS would work without costing me money. With the Route 66 software I dont have pay any??? I live here in Canada though.

The Route 66 application does cost money. However, as you know the Internet is filled with information and materials, you can find a free version. (I can’t tell you how though) A particular version of Route 66 does support the internal GPS receiver of the N95. You won’t need any connection trough the GPRS (AGPS) therefore it won’t cost you money for signals. You may want to contact me directly for more information.

    Hey Ronald

I have a N95 and am in the same boat as everyone else with paying for GPS.

Can you email me the information I need on what to get and how to set it up.

I am also in Australia, would that pose a problem with mapping at all.

Many thanks (on behalf of the majority of N95 users) for all your hard work and great to see there are still non profitable intelligent people in the world.
