Nokia N95 Internal GPS w/ Garmin Mobile XT
Since my last post on the Nokia N95 Internal GPS, a lot of people emailed me about what they should do and how to get the files. It is quite simple to find files on some mobile forums and websites, but it requires a lot of reading and digging.
So now I am going to post this information here so people don’t have to struggle for days to make their Nokia N95 Internal GPS work for free. Last time I talked about the Route 66 software, but now I have found a better solution for your N95 GPS. It is the Garmin Mobile XT software for Symbian S60. It will also work on N82’s internal GPS too. It is far quicker and more detailed than the Route 66 that I recommended before. So here are the files and step by step guide:
Before you go at it, I have to make it clear that I did not make the files or promote the use of pirated software. This is a collection of information and intend for sharing and learning. If you like what you are using, please buy it.
1) Download the main files here.
You will need WinRAR to unpack the files. If you don’t have it, download it here.
2) Download the maps that you need. (Torrent files and they may take a while to download)
North America Map
Europe Map
Australia Map (David’s request)
After you have finish downloading the map, install the map program. (On your PC. Later you can select which
parts to transfer to phone)
edit: The map source unlock code is (GNG55 - L8WSA - S7YET - 9U246 - GJFQT) for North Ameria.
not sure about others. May also work? Google around to find others. You need to unlock the map to be able to use internal GPS.
3) Connect your Nokia N95 to your computer via USB cable, and set your phone as mass storage mode.
4) Run the support files installation that you have downloaded in the pack. It should install on your phone.
5) Run the free base map file. It should install on your phone.
5) Run the main file that says XT for Symbian S60. It should also install on your phone.
6) Now unplug your USB and run Garmin XT on your phone. The icon should be under applications some where.
7) Within the program, navigate to About page and find the CARD ID. Write down the number.
8 ) Exit the program and connect your phone again to the computer.
9) Now open keygen in the first package and enter the CARD ID and generate 2 keys. One for program, and one for map.
10) Open SW.UNL with notepad and paste your device unlock code. Save and close.
11) Open GMAPSUPP.UNL and paste your map unlocked code. Save and close. (Make sure you choose the right map that you want to install)
12) Go to your phone’s memory in My Computer. Copy the 2 files SW and GMAPSUPP inside the Garmin XT folder.
13) Open the map program on your computer while your phone is still connected. Choose the regions that you need and copy the maps to the file by following the instructions. (May take a while)
14) When that’s done, disconnect your phone and it should say Garmin XT detected, do you want to run. Choose YES.
14) Inside Garmin XT, disable bluetooth GPS and choose to use internal GPS only. Also disable GPRS support. Wait a few minutes and you should have a fully functional up to date GPS system. (Make sure you are standing outdoor if you want signal)

[...] UPDATE: Get all the files and a step by step guide here. [...]
June 11th, 2008 at 2:35 am
Hello Ronald,
Thanks for the information. But two of the links that you mention, the ones for the main files and the map files, direct me to a website called MegaUpload. The link for WinRar sends you to a good site where you can download directly. Is MegaUpload the site where these files need to be downloaded? If so, I guess a subscription is required.
Thanks for the interesting information because I’ve been trying to get my the Route 66 software that came bundled with another phone (Nokia 6600) to work on the new phone that I just purchases (Nokia N95). Customer support has given me some instructions on how to accomplish this, but unfortunately it doesn’t work. So now I’m searching for solutions.
Any help you can give would be fantastic!!
Mike

BTW…If you would like, I’d be happy to provide your with the installation instructions that Route 66 gave me. In my case, they were not effective in installing the Route 66 Mobile 7 Software on my N95.

hi I’m glad I’m not the only one having problems.
Like NK I’ve stumbled at number 13.
I’ve downloaded the north american files (seems to have mapsource included) and the european maps but I don’t seem to be able to get mapsource to recognise the two files included in the european maps download - can anyone help??
Can anyone list a step by step guide of how to install maps using mapsource as I seem to be struggling.
Any help is greatfully received.
Thanks.

HI, I have two questions:
1)In step 2. I download torrent Europe Map 1.4gb via Opera (Alcoholl image file). What shall I do with this files?.
2)In step 13. “Open the map program on your computer while your phone is still connected”.
Is it someware program for installing on pc??. I dont understand which program should I open. I see only keygen program for unlocking which is work ok.
Other steps is clear for me.
Please reply

I don’t think there are maps for South Africa. You can google it to find out.
No, Step 1 and 2 you download the files on PC.
Step 7 is on the phone. the bottom 3 buttons you got to the middle one. then you should see the ABOUT page.
The keygen is included in the package you download first thing. You run the keygen on your PC. then type in your Card ID. And the map you use. Then it will give you 2 keys.Put those keys in the text files. then transfer to phone Garmin root folder.
June 19th, 2008 at 8:42 am
[Ivica]
You will need Alcohol 120 to mount the file as a virtual drive. Or burn it on DVD. Then you can install it on your PC.
Yes, the map will install on your PC. Connect to your phone then you can choose parts of the map to transfer to your phone.
If you need mapping program unlock code. It is:
GNG55 - L8WSA - S7YET - 9U246 - GJFQT
This code is to unlock the PC map so you can transfer maps to your phone as full version. It is not for the text file. The map text file code you get it from the keygen.
June 19th, 2008 at 8:45 am
Thanks a million going to try it now
June 19th, 2008 at 8:45 am
[Kyle]
In that case, remove the Garmin program on your phone. Install again. Remember to install in the exact order I show.
Remember to also edit the 2 text files with correct code so that you can use the internal GPS.
June 19th, 2008 at 10:04 am
Is there a particular way to create those txt file or do you just use your note pad paste the code in there save and then patse in the garmin folder
June 21st, 2008 at 9:32 pm
at step 13 after loading the maps when i start garmin on my phone it asks me to unlock the maps any idea on how to do this ?
June 22nd, 2008 at 6:59 am
15) You must turn off/on your phone for the software to recognise your internal GPS. This was with an N82, not sure if it applies to N95’s.
June 26th, 2008 at 3:45 am

Hiya Ronald,
Cheers for all the help with getting this to work. I’m in the final leg but I’m having all kinds of trouble with the PC program MapSource. With the Australian map, the help files asks me to select the boundaries of the regions I would like to have on the GPS map. But there are no selectable regions to add to the maps sidebar:(
Any idea on what to do there?
Cheers
Nick
June 29th, 2008 at 11:24 am
hi ken,
you go to the signal settings and disable the bluetooth source. Only allowing internal signal.
Restart it and wait for a few minutes then it will be fine.
June 29th, 2008 at 11:25 am
hi nick,
I haven’t try the Australia map, but I think it is the same as North America. All you do is click on the regions on the map.
June 30th, 2008 at 2:55 pm

June 30th, 2008 at 11:17 pm
hi urdlef,
Good to see you found the Card ID.
This is a good thing which allows you to know more about your phone. Without doing things like this, you may end up using your N95 or N82 just for making calls.
If you have further questions, feel free to contact me directly via the Contact link on top of the page.
July 1st, 2008 at 5:38 am
how are you adding: waypoints / routes / tracks to it?
also: the box to “include route calculation data” could not be ticked?
is there an add up to them?
thank you
July 1st, 2008 at 6:33 pm
In nokia N95 8Gb, to get working internal GPS must use imei number as product ID (not phone’s IMEI, look in like position 7 Within the program, navigate to About page and find the IMEI number)
July 3rd, 2008 at 6:39 am

July 4th, 2008 at 8:47 pm
Hi Juuso,

Thank you for your help.
Cheers
July 4th, 2008 at 10:13 pm

July 5th, 2008 at 6:49 pm
hi Ivica,
nice to see everything work out for you. and think for for providing new maps
July 6th, 2008 at 2:28 am
Hi,
Does anyone know if the maps for North America can be downloaded via Rapidshare instead of torrents. Torrents take forever depending on seeders and leechers!
Thanks
July 7th, 2008 at 6:57 pm
Hi
Well everything is done. Not sure if the torrent was modified since it no longer comes with mapsource to transfer the maps. I downloaded North America from somewhere else with the unlock code, it transfers the maps perfectly but when I run garmin on my mobile (n95 8gb) i get: Can’t Unlock maps for garmin device with Unit Id ####. Do u want to unlock now? . I check the 2 files and they are not with a .txt extension. Everything looks fine. Does anyone have this problem?? I was so sure it would work and then this happened.
This is where I got the Garmin North America maps:
http://www.downloadstuffz.com/garmin-mapsource-city-navigator-north-america-v8-dvd/
July 7th, 2008 at 10:44 pm
Make sure you have entered the correct phone card ID and map name on the keygen. Open the 2 files with text editor and enter the correct codes. They are not txt files but you can edit them with notepad.
July 7th, 2008 at 11:00 pm
Hi Ronald
Ive done it so many times..the keygen generates a new number everytime and north america 2008 maps are select by default. I paste 2 the codes in the appropriate files and both have the UNL extension. But the same msg keeps poping up on the phone when i lauch the app. So weird. Dont know what to try anymore. Anymore ideas?

July 8th, 2008 at 3:58 am
Hi Ronald,
Is there a difference between Garmin MapSource City Navigator North America v8 and City navigator North America NT 2008. I’m thinking the keygen isn’t working becoz I have download the wrong version of the maps
Is that possible?
Thnx
July 8th, 2008 at 12:43 pm
I believe they are different map sources. However, I don’t think you need to find a new map. The keygen I’ve provided is an older version. Try finding the newer versions. They will have more keys for newer map sources. Just find the one that matches the map already install on your phone.
July 8th, 2008 at 2:10 pm
Hey Ronald
I took ur advice and downloaded the other 2 keygens from JetMouse, none of them work. Just curious, but was the torrent modified because its just a bunch of dll files and 1 cab file. Its not an image that u can mount or burn. No software is included in this program to trasnfer the maps to the mobile. The only reason why i think it doesn’t work is becoz of the North America v8 instead of NT 2008 that i downloaded. Once u have installed the app on the phone and generated the keys, theres no reason why it should not work. Anyway I have a real Garmin Nuvi 650, so its not real a big deal but just wanted one on the phone as a backup.
Thanks for ur help

July 8th, 2008 at 6:08 pm
hey ronald
thanks for the steps i have been able to install garmin on my phone (n95). But i am having a trouble with copying the australian map to my phone. Secondly as u mentioned in step 14 to disable bluetooth gps inside garmin, i wasn’t able to find it. Could you please help me .
Thanks buddy
July 9th, 2008 at 4:13 am
Hi Ronald,
I redowloaded the North America NT 2009 version of the maps. I was right, the little v8 and NT 2008 do make a difference for keygen. I uploaded the version NT 2009 of the maps with the latest keygen of 2009 and it worked first shot. Amazing little piece of software!!
Have a good one
July 9th, 2008 at 11:32 am
rick:
you can do it by selecting and clicking on the signal bars…
LC:
good to see everything works out for you.
I have a Garmin Nuvi too, but prefer to use the phone because it is everything in one package. Use a bluetooth headset and you can answer the phone too without intersection.
July 10th, 2008 at 9:34 pm
hey ronald
i still can’t figure out that problem o switching to internal gps.
where are the signal bars located?
when i open the software on the phone it starts and begins to find bluetooth pairing devices. could you please tell me where the signal bars are located.
thanks buddy
July 10th, 2008 at 11:15 pm
If you don’t see any signal bars… then it is the anti-something sign. It should be at the upper left corner.
Select it and if you see “disable” select it.
Then there should be 2 options.
1) bluetooth GPS device
2) built-in GPS device.
Select #2 then it should be fine.
July 11th, 2008 at 1:25 am
HEY RONALD
i did as you said but after disabling it the only thoing on the screen is ‘pair new gps’. There are no other options in it.
July 11th, 2008 at 1:56 am
Hi Ronald,
Having followed all the steps above and placed both the SW.UNL and GMAPSUPP.UNL without the text, the application starts , however it still asks for map code, the satellite works well as it shows all the available, why do you think it asks for the code when all the files have been placed in the Garmin folder. My unit is the Nokia N95 8G.
Thanking you in advance…
July 11th, 2008 at 9:20 am
hi, ive downloaded garmin xt and the north american maps and everythingis working fine. i am receiving gps signal and i can see my location on the map, however with the north american map i am unable to enter any routes. when i try to do so it says i have to install the “detailed” maps. i also noticed when i zoomed in on where i am which is toronto canada, i can only see major highways. as for streets i cant see any. can anyone help? also are there any hong kong maps available? tia!
July 11th, 2008 at 10:08 am
another thing i noticed waswhenever i run the garminxt program from my n95 8gb it says at the very begining “cant unlock maps for garmin device unit id ********, do you want to unlock now? when i press yes it says to enter an unlock code of 25 characters. problem is everybutton i press on the phone doesnt produce a number. like the whole keypad doesnt work. how do you enter the code? anyhow it got to the point where i couldnt enter nothing so i just selected the “back option” upon doing so everything reverts to the garmin interface where i can begin selecting things from the menu and tracking myself with gps. only problem is, the maps are not detailed. am i doing something wrong? gps works fine, maps work fine, only prob is not detailed.

WORKS PERFECT FOR ME, INSTRUCTIONS ARE HORRIBLE IN THIS WEBSITE BUT MANAGED TO DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
a+++++++++
July 15th, 2008 at 4:57 pm
Works perfectly now, as mentioned by Dan, the information provided is only half as there are more applications required, please do not just copy and paste from random sites as you are making life miserable for others who are experiencing frustration from the information you have provided.

July 15th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
question, now that everything works perfectly, can i update my maps?
July 15th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
OMG I TRIED DOING THE UPDATE AND I SCREWED UP THE APPLICATION, NOW WHEN I OPEN IT IT SAYS CANNOT OPEN APPLICATION FOR SECURITY REASONS, WHAT SHOULD I DO????
July 15th, 2008 at 10:45 pm
Nuri:
I did not just copy and paste the stuff I wrote. I am not a pro at this and I am just trying to share something I have done and know it works.
These things take patience and trial and error, if I can do it on my phone you can do. You cannot blame anyone for stuff going wrong because I am just trying to provide you convenience.
Before I installed it on my phone, I did some research on many different websites and forums. It took me days to get it working.
The files are not hosted by me and I cannot guarantee anything. Things do change, and feel free to discuss this if you have anymore questions.
July 15th, 2008 at 10:47 pm
Dan:
I have never updated my maps so I cannot answer your question.
You can try to uninstall the application and try installing again. I don’t know enough to tell you, but I believe redoing everything should fix the problem.
July 16th, 2008 at 2:15 am

Is it really the key or did i do something wrong?
THnx anyway for getting me so far:D
Cyaa
July 23rd, 2008 at 7:27 am
STUPIIIID me:P
The keys of the map are in a file that has been downloaded togheter with the map in the torrent!
So the north american key doesnt work on europe but this one does: UEQYQZ24T9772UV4QEYNUWBH5!
So every european using this walktrough for garmin, it works out great!
Thnx Ronald, really good explanations!
July 23rd, 2008 at 3:09 pm
Hey ! I stuck point 13 after download torrent file could’t open or save .
July 23rd, 2008 at 5:20 pm
Hi, i was wondering if this will work on the att tilt?
July 23rd, 2008 at 5:56 pm
How to torrent file work at step 13 ?
July 24th, 2008 at 1:41 am
Firstly - Mike: I’m not sure what is in the Euro file, but you shouldn’t need to open the map file. If the file you’re trying to open has .iso at the end (a guess) then google on how to mount iso images (you should be able to find software to mount or burn the image fairly easily). If it’s something else then again, my suggestion would be to look through the other files or google the extension, as it’s probably a binary file anyway that you can’t edit in notepad.
Then with the rest of the post…
Hi Ronald, thanks heaps for pointing me to your little tutorial. Had a couple of issues with the install process but purely because I was reading things wrong, but once I re-read it things worked.
I’ve done all except install one of the maps, as the I’ve still got the australian torrent downloading (Which I’m hoping includes NZ data also).
I do have one question that you or someone else may be able to help with…
I downloaded New Zealand free maps from gwproject.org. I dont have MapSource (I’m hoping it’s in the ISO that’s downloading) so I used the SendMap application that they reference on their site.
This created a file called GMAPSUPP.IMG that I placed in the Garmin folder. Now looking in the application on the phone it boots fine without any errors, and under “Tools > Manage My Data > Map Sets” I see two entries; the basemap and one called “detailed maps”, however nothing more than the basemap shows in the map view.
Is there something else I should be doing, or is there something specific that MapSource may do differently? Any suggestions appreciated. =]
July 24th, 2008 at 3:27 am
Update:
Well, I got the Australian ISO down. The key listed in the included file worked fine, but I didn’t need to use the reg file even though it stated it was required in that same txt file.
The ISO burnt to disk fine and installed the MapSource program aswell. This program detected and the maps as indicated by the doco on the gwprojects site and when I finished and started the software on my phone it all showed up perfectly for NZ.
Thanks again Ronald, I googled and trawled forums for a couple of days before I messaged you, and within the same evening as getting your reply I have the system working. Much appreciated!
July 24th, 2008 at 3:48 am

One question - the additional online features like traffic, gas prices, hotels, etc., don’t work. When program accesses the online Garmin server, it cannot confirm my serial number. Is this just the price I pay for using the free version, or are there additional steps I need to take?
Thanks

For those of you who seem to be having some issues about not being able to open torrent files…
These are not the actual map data you need. These are files that allow you to acquire the map data from a multi-point p2p network. You need a client application to open the torrent file and use it to get the map source, which you can then deal with as appropriate. uTorrent (http://www.utorrent.com/) is a good little windows torrent program, or there are numerous others available free for most platforms.
It has to be said, sometimes a little googling about particular things you don’t understand might be useful instead of expecting the tutorial to spell out EVERYTHING for you.
Again, Ronald, awesome job! Just been up to Auckland for the weekend and software worked great! Well, as great as any gps software anyway, there are inherent limitations that no software is going to get around. Hugely happy with the setup thanks.

For those confused on step 13
you need to download alcohol 120 program, the open the map folder you have downloaded. You have a MDS file and a MDF file. Once you have installed alcohol, right click on the MDF file and select mount image. The Map source program will load.
Then click on install city navigator NT. This will install the mapsource program to the c drive under a garmin folder. When this is done you can go to that folder and then select the mapsource program, then to transfer the map to the phone, follow the instructions in the manul for map source which is a PDF file in the garmin folder.
This should work.

erik: You can have both map sets installed simultaneously. If you transfer both lots with MapSource you should be able to view either regions maps just by viewing that area. If all you get is the base map you may have not installed that areas detailed maps correctly.

I downloaded the 1gm torrent north amerca maps file. I need to know how to install it on my pc. There is no setup or install file? Please help.
August 19th, 2008 at 9:00 pm
Ronald,
For some reason, I cannot import the map from mapsource to my mobile - I can view the map percectly in map source on my PC, but when I try to transfer a map it tells me I need a map selected - no maps are showing up in the list, even though I can browse the australia map perfectly via mapsource.
anythoughts?
thanks
August 19th, 2008 at 10:36 pm
Ok Scratch that, figured out how to do it.
There’s a flash file in the downloads that shows you how to install the maps to the device, but for anyone else struggling, you basically draw around the section of map you want, and then hit export.
Thanks for the tutorial Ronald, it’d be handy if you deleted some of the clutter out of the comments section here, and updated the main Steps with all the things people have had problems with - other than that - very happy!
I got it working on a N95 8g with the 1.1 keygen and Australia Maps.
August 20th, 2008 at 8:09 pm
I installed this without problems, works great! Only issue is that I do not have voice installed? It is possible to figure this out? Thanks!

Brilliant!!! Took a bit of time to get going, but worth it in the end. If you’re stuck on step 13 it’s probably because you haven’t found the map tool in map source (hover your mouse over the incons in the toolbar). Thanks heaps.

Hi Ronald

Have a N82 (black) and have gone through all the steps successfully except for 14 after which my phone does not says Garmin XT detected. If you go under Apps and Start Garmin XT it goes on searching for a GPS device. On the top left side you see bars (same as signal and right next to it is Bluetooth sign and it seems the phone is trying to search through it and returns an error “ NO GPS Device Found Try again”
If you go into Garmin settings ? System ? Remote GPS. It says “Disabled” and Icon opposite to it. If you click on it it shows GPS is off and. Down below “Disabled” you have “Pair New GPS” and if you enable it, gives you the same error “ NO GPS Device Found Try again”
So basically Garmin is not using the Internal GPS and once you get out to Main Phone page Bluetooth is again turned on. I also have Gone Under Tool ? Settings? General ? Positioning ? Positioning Methods and Enabled only “Integrated GPS” but still Garmin does not use Internal GPS.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Cheers

I would welcome advice about opening the .unl files mentioned in the instructions (steps 10 & 11). Where are these to be found, or are they simply created by pasting the code into notepad and then saving? I have not found existing files of this kind in the program. Would appreciate reply from anyone who has gone through the guide.

How do we update our maps in the future (2009, 2010 etc.)
What will we need to do / change
October 11th, 2008 at 11:28 am
Hello Ronald,
Like so many here i too thank you for this post but then like so many others too i my self got stock at 13 i downloaded it but do .exe files to run like the first ones that we installed on the phone…
1.So far Garmin is already on my… (which is by the way is a Nokia E90 would that be a problem?)
2. Did the 2 “.unl” files already, saved it and closed it on Garmin folder.
3. Clicked on your North America Mapsource, Downloaded it, Unloaded it, and here’s is “EXACTLY” what i got:
(a)A Folder named “instal dir”.
(b)A Folder named “USB_Drovers”
(c) 7 “.dll” files named “setupDEU/setupESP/setupITA/msvcr71
/setupENU/setupFRA/seyupLOC”
(d)A text document named “Installation & Unlock” and here is what’s writen on that text i cut and pasted it:
To unlock the maps on the PC use: type “DEMO” into unlockwizzard
Enjoy!
