Simple 4 Steps To Good Time Management

January 31st, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Inspirations

Good Time ManagementYour time management skill plays a big part on your success or failure. If you are a frequent procrastinator then it is now time to change your habit. Everyone procrastinates at times, but it can be good for you and bad for you. Let me explain this in detail. Your everyday tasks can be broken down to 4 categories: Meaningless tasks, normal tasks, important tasks, and urgent tasks.

Meaningless Tasks: things that you do at a regular basis but contribute nothing to your goal or success. When you need to do some research on the web, you may stumble upon some websites that interested you but have nothing to do with your research. You end up spending endless hours to complete the research but it would only take 15 minutes if you were focused. Another example of a very meaningless task is chatting on MSN or other IMs while doing your work. Try to eliminate most if not all your meaningless tasks. You will be amazed how much work you can accomplish with the same amount of time.
Normal Tasks: these are things you do everyday and you rarely pay attention to. For example, socializing with your co-workers and friends, reading newspaper, watching TV, and buying coffee. Generally these are tasks that do no harm to you and at the same time do no much good to you. Most normal tasks are associated with your lifestyle, so you don’t have to stop doing them. However, try doing them last, and work on more important things first. If you can, try outsourcing those tasks that involve buying coffee, etc… You know what I mean.
Important Tasks: tasks that are somewhat important to your life and your success. These tasks can be improved for more efficient time management. If you are a messy person, you can spend hours per day searching for documents and files on your desk or in your computer. Try making things more organized so you can find your important files quicker. Spending time with your family is important but you can arrange to meet time during your downtime.
Urgent Tasks: things that you know you must finish or you will face failure. Don’t procrastinate on those tasks because one day you have procrastinated, that is one more day of work you have to catch up.

There are 4 simple steps to follow for improving your time management skill. Follow it daily and you will see amazing results in a short period of time.

Step 1: Write down what you have to do on paper. If you don’t write them down you will forget. Our brains tend to put the things we have written down into long term memory. Also, with a list of what you have to complete each day, you will most likely finish them on time.

Step 2: Organize your list from urgent tasks down to normal tasks. Our list should contain around 10 items and the top 3 should be the things you must complete that day. Things that are less important and can be left over for the next day are usually on the bottom of the list.

Step 3: Plan how you would approach each task. Think of the ways and steps you need to complete each item on your list. You can’t possibly get to your destination without knowing how to get there. Time management takes a lot of planning. Actually working on your tasks is just a small part.

Step 4: The last and final step is “Just do it!” Most people do very good job on organizing and planning, but they just can’t seem to complete anything. There are 2 problems I’ve noticed. Some people think they are very good at multitasking and work on 3 or 4 things at the same time. It is better for you to work at a single task single-mindedly. You will complete it faster and generally it is better quality. The second problem is that some people dream up the world’s best plan but they don’t realize it is impossible to complete within deadline. You must know your time limit. It is better to complete an adequate work than to have the best work but not completed.

This is one of best posts I’ve written. The information comes from my own experience and observation and also from some reading. I hope this can help you become a better and a more efficient time manager.

What’s Wrong With The World? I don’t Feel Safe Anymore

January 30th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Technology

Today I was driving back from school. I heard a very shocking news on the radio. The Bio-Medical building of University of British Columbia (UBC) was put in a lock down by the police because there was a serious treat. No news regarding what actually happened has released yet. News reported heavily armed officers and bomb squads were on the scene. Holy cow! If i was one of the students in the building during the lock down, I wouldn’t feel good at all.

Aside from all the numerous killing and shooting happened recently in Vancouver, what caught my attention was the death of a 15 year old student last week. He was stabbed to death in a park. One of his friends was also badly injured. What the heck is wrong with the safety these days? Is the problem caused by the economy or people are just getting mad of nothing?

Inspiration Monday - A Strong Relationship Helps You Succeed

January 28th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Inspirations

I had always wanted to write about relationship and success. They are in fact interrelated to each other. After reading “The Number One Reason for My Internet Success” on John Chow’s blog, I would like to expand on this thought about relationship on this week’s Inspiration Monday.

A great deal of inspiration and motivation come from your loved one. A good relationship between you and your partner will increase your chance of being successful. Why? It’s simple. The number one motivation a person can get is support. Without support, you will most likely fall apart and give up on your goal. Sure you can get support from your friends, but what matters the most is your wife/husband or girlfriend/boyfriend.

Behind Every Successful Man is a Woman

John Chow is totally right on this. I guess this is programmed into most Chinese men. A good relationship with your partner will provide you with a good environment for building your success. Whenever you hit a roadblock, he/she will be there to motivate you and encourage you to keep going. Without a good relationship, your path to success will be extremely long. If you are still single, go find your significant other as soon as possible.

I am not yet as successful as John, but we do have one thing in common. My motivation and inspiration come largely from the woman behind me.

Witness Wanted? Where Do You Go To?

January 26th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Technology

Yesterday I was driving by Alderbridge Way in Richmond. I saw a big yellow sign on a post. It got attention but the only two words I could see were “Witness Wanted.” What struck my mind first was that what is the chance of finding the witness you needed by posting a sign on the road? There are many cases of accidents and crime each day, how do they find their witnesses?

There are websites for job search, restaurant search, friend search, why not have one for witness search? This is a very good business model. A portal that lists all the witness wanted cases by location. Searchers can register for free and post listings for free. However, if rewards are offered, the website will take a cut. Witnesses can also post what they have witnessed and find potential searchers. I believe this model can provide a central home for victims and witnesses. It is much more effective than buying a newspaper ad to search for witnesses because the viewers are much more targeted.

Nokia N95 Internal GPS Works

January 24th, 2008 | 16 Comments | Posted in Technology

Nokia N95 8GB Cell PhonePersonally, I am not a big fan of Nokia cell phones. However, the past few days I was busy playing with a dozen or more Nokia N95s. Why? Because I am able to provide a service everyone wants, and everyone started to approach me for such service. This ties into one of the biggest business concept ever: offer a service or product that is unique and it will generate a buzz by itself. I am not going to talk about business concepts in this post. I am going off-topic and talk about phones.

If you’re a Nokia N95 user, you should know that the integrated navigation system is not the best. It does show you maps and tell you where you are but in order to use its full features like voice turn by turn, you have to pay. It costs around $10 for 7 days of use. If you do the math, why not just buy a standalone GPS?! As a result, many people are looking for alternative GPS solutions for their Nokia N95s.

About 4 days ago, one of my friends asked me to help him out with his N95 GPS. He wants to use the GPS but not willing to pay for subscription. I told him I would try and brought it home. After a few hours of research and downloading, I made it work. I installed a special copy of Route 66 navigation software and able to use the N95’s internal GPS receiver. My friend was very happy and he began to spread the news. The next day, other friends using the Nokia N95 started calling me.

I am not going to post any links or guides here because of legal issues. However, if you want to use your N95 GPS for free and having problems, feel free to discuss with me.

Update On Build A Niche Store (BANS) Project

January 21st, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in The Internet

It was been a week since I’ve written about my Build A Niche Store (BANS) project. Boy! It was a though time getting the script installed. It wasn’t the script’s fault though. After days of solution hunting I’ve got through it and finally got something to show. You can view the project site at CellPhoneJet.com, feel free to add any comment or suggestion.

Build A Niche Store Project (BANS) CellPhoneJet.com
Main page of CellPhoneJet.com, my Build A Niche Store project featuring the coolest cell phone auctions.

After 2 days of customizing the layout and pages, it now looks like a full functional website. However, it still needs some search engine optimizing and original content creating. My schedule for this week is to finish building the website and by next week I can start driving traffic to it. The funny thing is that I have notice Googlebot had already visit the site and received 4 unique hits even though I had never setup a link to it. I’ve already started to brainstorm my next niche store in order to reach my 5 stores in 3 months goal.

Also, I’ve noticed there is an online course on blogging for profit called Blog Mastermind. Read about it in Chris Bloczynski’s blog. I wonder if there will be a university degree in the future called “Blogging” in the faculty of Business. :)

Inspiration Monday - When You Are Down, Go Look Around!

January 21st, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Inspirations

Let’s face it. Life is full of ups and downs. Who knows what is going to happen tomorrow. Lots of people have told me to live life to the fullest and enjoy the most out of today and don’t worry about tomorrow. Such statement is very childish but still somewhat meaningful. Of course we have to plan for tomorrow and plan for our goals, but still enjoy our days while doing so. Most hard working people are very focused on their tasks on hand and rarely take breaks. What if reality is letting you down? What if things are not going well for you, both for your life or your business? This week’s inspiration is when you feel frustrated and things are not going well, take a short break and relax in a place that is foreign for you.

Ronald Su At Rockies
Picture of me during the trip to the Rocky Mountain in Banff, Alberta.

Whenever I feel tired and unable to keep up with my tasks, I go travel. It doesn’t have to be far and long. You should do the same. If your time is very limited, just take the weekend off and join a tour. My last trip was to the Rockies in Alberta. The total duration of the trip was about 4 days. The reason why I chose to join a tour instead of driving there myself is because I could meet lots of quality people and listen to their stories. During the trip I met a family from Los Angeles. I had learned a lot from them. You will never know who you will meet and what you will see. You may also meet some people who may know the solution for your problems. Additionally, visiting places that you don’t visit regularly can refresh your mind and let you think clearly. The important benefit for taking a short break to travel, aside from the gain in networking and knowledge, is knowing more about the person/people you go with. Maybe it is your wife/husband, girlfriend/boyfriend, best friend, or family. The experience is money can’t buy.

Trust me, after your break, you will feel freshed and ready to go at it again. You will have your drive back. You will have your visions clear. You will be focused again and solve all your problems.

By the way, David from MoneyNing is getting married in 3 weeks, please click here to congratulate him.

Business Basics - Starting Up a Business With Focus

January 19th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Technology

It’s time to go back to some business basics. Some of you might forgot the basics of starting up a business. I see a lot of small business these days making a critical mistake by not starting there business right. Do you have a new business idea? Are you going to start a business? If you are, you need to revisit the 4 approaches to tackle your market.

There are 2 groups that your business will belong to: broad or focused. Within each group, your business is either targeting cost or differentiation. So the 4 approaches are: broad and cost minded, broad and differentiation minded, focused and cost minded,  and focused and differentiation minded.

Broad and cost minded - you are entering your market by offering variety and lower prices than your competitors.
Broad and differentiation minded - you are offering variety and your products and services are better than your competitors.

Focused and cost minded - you are entering your market by offering a specific type of product or service, they are priced below your competitors.
Focused and differentiation minded - you are focusing on a specific type of product or service, they are better and different from your competitors.

Think of your blog as a business. Don’t just start your blog without  thinking about these 4 approaches. Most blogs are focused on a specific area of interest, but how will yours stand out from your competitors? Will you charge your advertisers less to get more businesses? Or will you charge your advertisers more because your site offers high quality content and attracts high quality visitors?

Take Those Damn Credit Cards!

January 17th, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in Technology

The first commercial vending machine was in business since the 1880s. It was a coin operated post card dispenser. More than 100 years later today, vending machines are everywhere, mostly dispensing soft drinks. The problem is most of them are still coin operated. Though some of them take paper bills too, but where is technological improvement?

Do we still like carrying those big heavy coins in our pockets? Sure, some of them take bills, but the problem is the machine will still give you coins as change. How many times have you turned back from buying at a vending machine because you don’t have enough change? To me, it happens almost everyday. Those damn vending machines in my school just won’t take the plastic. I always ended up going to the store in the cafeteria and buy my drink with my credit/debit card.

Can someone please make vending machines that can accept cards? The only company in United States that make credit card readers for vending machines is USA Technologies. Vendors can install those readers on their machines and accept payment via USA Technologies. It is still a painful process and credit card enabled vending machines will not be everywhere until the readers are integrated. If you own some vending machines, expect to see explosive sales increase when you upgrade them with credit card readers.

3 Reason Why You Should Learn Chinese

January 14th, 2008 | 9 Comments | Posted in Technology

China FlagDon’t get me wrong, I am not going to tell you how China will become the strongest nation in the world. I don’t think it’s going to happen, but you should still learn Chinese.

Most of you already know the benefits of learning the Chinese language and feel a little tempted to learn. Why haven’t you started? Let me convince you briefly here. In my opinion, there are 3 most important reasons why you must learn the language. I know because I was born in China and grew up in North America. I received most of my education from western society but I felt that my Chinese root still needs to be kept. I am fluent in reading, writing, listening, and speaking both Mandarin and Cantonese. For starters I recommend learning how to speak Mandarin first. The reason why is that it is very similar to English and it is spoken by the majority of the Chinese population. I am not going to teach you Chinese here so let me give you the 3 reasons.

Reason #1: Everybody knows China has a booming economy. No matter where your business takes you in the future, you will have to deal with Chinese businesspeople at some point. For example, if you are selling something and you need a manufacturer in China, you are most likely be able to find a good one if you can communicate with them directly.

Reason #2: Chinese people are everywhere. Ever wonder what those guys are talking about beside you? If you can understand and speak Chinese, you have a big advantage. You can pretend you don’t know and keep listening to those secrets that pass by your ears everyday.

Reason #3: The Chinese language has incredible history, culture, and knowledge. The language is so powerful that a simple short poem written by Li Bai can change the way you view life. There are so much to learn from the language I believe it is the #1 foreign language you must learn in your lifetime.

If I didn’t convince you enough, it’s OK. I bet in the future you will hate yourself for not listening to me.
